The French Cancan
Tucked away in the Lychgate Mall on Riddiford Street, Newtown, is the French Cancan.
And boy can they. Delicious cakes, pastries and confectionery, all served by lovely French ladies amid lots of cheerful pink (tablecloths and glasses included).
The pastries are light and flakey (yes I confess to a nibble of the take-away one for him indoors, purely in the interests of research though!), the brioche was deliciously dense and wonderfully flavoured (raspberry pistachio), and the cakes looked heavenly (planning a return soon).
The range of pastries was extensive, and it took quite some time to narrow down to the thing I most wanted to try. I’m going to have to take friends back for the cake experience I think (sharing friends only need apply!).
Chef-owner Eric Hausser is a two-starred Michelin chef-patissier, and his wife Sophie manages the front of house. They have a Parisian background, and a lovely large kitchen from which to create their magic.
I enjoyed my time there reading the weekend paper and soaking in all the ‘Bonjours’ and ‘Merci’s’ going on around me as other customers came and went, and can’t imagine anyone could visit here and leave without a take-home bag as well.
I could probably just about move in and live here.
Tuesday to Saturday, daytimes.
